Financial Aid for Summer Study and Education Abroad

Many Emory students choose to participate in summer and education abroad programs. If you are eligible for financial aid and would like to participate in either type of study, we recommend you begin planning early to ensure you understand if and how your aid can be used. Keep reading to learn more about your financial aid options for summer and education abroad programs.

Financial Aid for Summer Study

If you qualify for financial aid during the regular academic year and register in summer courses, the Office of Financial Aid will consider whether you should also receive a summer aid package. No additional application materials are necessary.

Your eligibility for summer aid will be determined once you enroll in summer courses and aid notifications begin in April for all undergraduate students. You will not receive federal loans for summer study if you have exhausted your eligibility for these programs during the fall and spring terms.

We recommend you register as early as possible to ensure you receive any funds you are eligible for before the summer payment deadline. If you plan to participate in more than one summer session, you must register for all sessions at the same time.

Once you receive a financial aid notification for summer, any change to your summer enrollment that results in an overall increase or decrease of enrolled hours will result in an adjustment to your aid package. You must immediately email your financial aid advisor if you make any such changes.

Financial Aid For Education Abroad

Did you know that you can utilize your full financial aid package and scholarships with you if you enroll in an Emory or Emory-affiliated education abroad program – whether for a semester or a full year?

You will remain fully registered as an Emory student when you participate in Education Abroad and will receive any institutional financial aid and scholarships plus most state and federal aid you would be eligible for otherwise. The amount of summer Education Abroad assistance you are eligible for is determined by the number of credits you are registered for and your financial aid package for the applicable academic year. If you receive a financial aid package, it will be for an amount up to (but not exceeding) the amount you would have received during a domestic semester at Emory. If you would otherwise be eligible for work-study, you should speak with your financial aid advisor to learn more about your options.

Eligible students may apply the Emory Courtesy Scholarship toward academic tuition costs for an education abroad program.

Additionally, Emory College's Office of International and Summer Programs (OISP) funds and manages summer Education Abroad Scholarships for students who are eligible for institutional need-based grants.

If you decide to use a loan to finance a summer education abroad program, you should begin your loan application as soon as possible after you are accepted into the program. The Office of Financial Aid must receive your loan approval no later than the summer education abroad payment deadline. Otherwise, you may not be able to participate your program due to late payment.

If you have any questions about your eligibility or would like additional information about specific financial aid options, contact or schedule an appointment with your financial aid advisor.
