Finding a Job

Federal Work-Study students may interview for a variety of jobs either on or off-campus, including opportunities to provide community service. If you accepted Federal Work-Study for the fall semester, then search for Federal Work-Study jobs online in the EagleOps database beginning August 1, or in-person during orientation at the annual job fair held on campus each August. Students that accepted Federal Work-Study for the spring semester may begin searching for jobs on EagleOps during the preceding winter break.

Placement in a position of your choice allows you to begin receiving income to pay your expenses. You may begin working when all of your financial aid and hiring documents are completely processed and approved. Your Federal Work-Study earnings will be deposited directly into the bank account you designate. Federal Work-Study earnings will not appear as a credit on your bill; you are paid biweekly, based upon the number of hours you work, and funds are credited to your personal bank account.

Changing Jobs

At any point during the academic year a student may change Federal Work-Study jobs. However, it is recommended that you give your employer at least two weeks' notice to process all necessary paperwork. You must be properly terminated from your previous position prior to being hired into a new position. For accurate recordkeeping purposes, it is imperative that you advise your new employer that you have recently changed positions.

Hours and Salary

Students typically work 10 to 20 hours per week. Federal Work-Study students are limited to working 20 hours per week during periods of enrollment and 40 hours per week during periods of non-enrollment, such as winter and spring breaks. Students who work more than 20 hours per week (among all campus jobs) are subject to FICA (Social Security) taxes being deducted from their wages.

Your department should notify you when you reach your salary maximum. The department has the option of either continuing your assignment and paying you 100 percent from its departmental budget or ending your assignment altogether. If funding permits, most departments will make every attempt to continue your assignment.

The hourly wage range for students is $9.00 to $15.00, depending upon the complexity of the job and the skills required to perform the job. Federal Work-Study earnings are taxable income. Emory Human Resources provides each student employee with a W-2 form after the end of the calendar year, which can also be accessed online.

Students are allowed employment in only one Federal Work-Study (FWS) job at a time with one exception; a student may be employed in two FWS jobs if one of the positions is in the Emory Reads tutoring program (a division of the America Reads program). A student can be employed as a regular student worker (funded entirely by the hiring department) and as a Federal Work-Study student worker simultaneously.

Before a student starts to work any Federal Work-Study job, all necessary hiring forms must be on file with Human Resources. The responsible supervisor for the student must complete all hiring via HR Web and the hiring approved by Human Resources.
